The New York Times Introduces nytimages.com
A New Resource for Editors

NEW YORK, June 6, 2001 -- The New York Times Photo and Graphics Service announced today the introduction of www.nytimages.com, an online resource for the journalistic community. The new site offers selected photographs and graphics from The New York Times newspaper and nine of The New York Times News Service's partner news organizations, including The Boston Globe, Cox and Hearst. The site launched on May 30 and is updated several times a day. Visitors to the site may review its photographs and graphics in small-scale versions, with explanatory captions.

"Nytimages.com is a complete resource center of photographs and graphics that capture daily news events and complement thorough reporting," said Sergio Florez, director of the Photo and Graphics Service. "The site's content and navigability make it easy for journalists and editors to research and retrieve images."

On a daily basis, visitors to www.nytimages.com will find:

* More than 25 news and feature photos

* More than 10 graphics, including charts, diagrams, illustrations, maps and timelines

* Special advisories about breaking news and its related coverage

* The site editors' choice of three top three images, updated frequently

The site also includes special photo and graphics packages. Currently available are:

* A series on unrest in the Middle East by Rina Castelnuovo of The New York Times

* A report on Indians in Mexico by Rodolfo Gonzalez of the Austin American-Statesman

Nytimages.com is organized for maximum accessibility. Editors may browse through all of the site's photographs and graphics or focus on the categories of General News, International, Financial, Sports, Entertainment, Travel and Lifestyle.

Photos and graphics are compiled from The Times and its News Service's partners: The Arizona Republic, The Boston Globe, Cox News Service, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Hearst Newspapers, The Kansas City Star, The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Nytimages.com contains links to the News Service site, its partners' sites, and The New York Times Syndicate and The New York Times Photo Archives.

Editors may purchase photos or graphics on a one-time or contract basis, with special terms for contract clients. Pricing information is available through sales executives listed on the site. Photo and Graphics Service editors post material to www.nytimages.com and the site is maintained by Wieck Media Services of Addison, Tex.
