Another Record Set for Web Use by Media at the 2004 NAIAS in Detroit

DETROIT (Jan. 9, 2004) - This was another record breaking year at the 2004 North American International Auto Show as members of the media downloaded nearly 94,000 ready-to-publish image and video files from Wieck Media Services database during the four-day media preview at the Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center.

This is the fourth consecutive year that media representatives have used the Internet and Web sites in record numbers to help cover the popular event. According to Wieck Media Services, 93,626 image files were downloaded overall, along with nearly 150 broadcast quality video files. Video distribution services were introduced by Wieck in mid-2003.

"While the number of video downloads were small in comparison to the number of still images downloaded, were very pleased to see CNN among those logging in and pulling down video clips," said chairman Jim Wieck. "We believe video is the next frontier for our Web distribution sites."

Smashing old records at NAIAS

The show opened Sunday, Jan. 4, and Wieck said that two days into the show reporters, editors, photographers and producers already had downloaded more than 54,000 image and video files for use in print publications and in TV news programming. That nearly matched the 2003 four-day record when 58,383 image files were downloaded. This year's busiest day was Monday, Jan. 5, when nearly 33,000 image files were downloaded.

In addition to providing Web distribution of media files during the auto shows, Wieck also provided an on-site media work center for its clients and managed and maintained the Photo and Video services offered in the Michelin Media Center that is available to all registered media. Wieck's team of six managers and staffers assisted clients with the on-site posting of press releases, images and video clips and also assisted members of the media with on-site downloading of files to be electronically sent, along with their stories, to their publications or production centers.

Preparing for the shows with autodeadline.com

In preparation for the Detroit show and the Los Angeles auto show, which held a two-day media preview Dec.30-31, automakers provided thousands of image, text and video files to be posted on their own Web sites operated by Wieck, and to the autodeadline.com

media site developed by Wieck. Thousands more were posted on a real-time basis during the event. Overall, 8,687 media files were placed in Wieck servers as automakers prepared for the shows. And 5,743 files - including 1,291 video clips - were added during the Detroit show alone.

"The autodeadline.com site has proven to be very popular with the media as a one-stop shop for all their coverage needs," said Tim Roberts, Wieck's president. "Since it's introduction last October 15, we have added hundreds of media users all around the world and the number of ready-to-publish or ready-to-broadcast files that they since have downloaded is approaching 100,000."

"Overall, for the past 12 months, media users have downloaded more than a million and a half high-resolution images and video files from our client servers," said Webmaster Alex Sian.

Companies that provided media files for autodeadline.com include American Honda Motors; Audi; Robert Bosch Corp.; DaimlerChrysler; Delphi; Dupont Automotive; Ford Motor Co.; General Motors; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.; Hyundai Motor America; American Isuzu Motors, Inc.; KIA; Michelin; Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.; American Suzuki Motor Corp.; Toyota North America, and Visteon Corporation.

Wieck's founders, who are veterans of United Press International with world-wide connections within the media, have a deep understanding of what media companies need and how they consume digital images and other content. This gives Wieck the ability to provide needed expertise for companies to enhance Web distribution through the creation of digital newsrooms, web-based image distribution portals, broadcast quality videos, satellite delivery, image databases and event support.
